Why a Bag Does Not Need to Be Fully Reinforced

A structured bag is not necessarily a rigid bag.

Its shape depends first on the pattern, the choice of leather and the way the different pieces are assembled. Reinforcements play an important role, but they do not need to cover the entire surface of the bag.

At atelier &LAB, we use targeted reinforcements only in the areas that are genuinely subject to stress.

On the NUMÉRO 03 Medium, the volume is maintained primarily through its construction, complemented by reinforcements at the base and around the straps. This approach preserves a clearly defined silhouette without adding unnecessary layers of rigid materials.

The base must support the weight of the contents. The straps and their attachment points are also subjected to repeated tension. These are therefore the areas that require the greatest stability.

By contrast, reinforcing the entire body of a bag can increase its weight and limit the leather’s ability to evolve through use.

The NUMÉRO 04 Medium also illustrates this search for balance. Its shape remains clearly defined thanks to the geometry of its volume and the construction of the design, without turning the bag into a completely rigid shell.

The leather itself also contributes to the bag’s structure. Its thickness, density and flexibility directly influence the final result. A carefully selected leather can give definition to a volume while retaining a degree of movement.

This measured flexibility allows the bag to sit more naturally against the body and adapt to clothing and everyday movement.

It also helps reduce weight. Every additional layer of reinforcement increases the weight of the bag before anything has even been placed inside it. Weighing approximately 360 grams, the NUMÉRO 03 Medium was designed according to this principle: using material only where it serves a genuine purpose.

The NUMÉRO 01 Large follows the same principle on a larger scale. Its generous volume remains structured without reproducing the rigidity of a traditional briefcase.

A good reinforcement is therefore not one that is added everywhere. It is one that is placed in the right area.

At atelier &LAB, structure begins with the design, the pattern and the construction. Reinforcements are then used to support the essential areas, preserving the balance between shape, durability and lightness.
